| biography:
| Dutch naval hero, born in Scheveningen, W Netherlands. He gained his nickname after losing a leg in battle. Of humble birth, he became an admiral in service for the Dutch West India Company, with a reputation for bravery and for his fair treatment of prisoners. He fought in the West Indies, Brazil, and West Africa against the Spaniards and Portuguese, and distinguished himself at the Battle of the Dunes in 1639. In 1635 he was captured by Dunkirk privateers, but released. In 1641 he captured Luanda and San Thomé from the Portuguese, and died in San Thomé. |
