| King of the Hellenes (1947–64), born in Athens, Greece. In 1922 he served with the Greek navy against the Turks; but in 1924, when a Republic was proclaimed, went into exile, returning to Greece as crown prince in 1935. In World War 2 he served with the Greek general staff in the Albanian campaign, and was in exile in London (1941–6). His reign covered the latter half of the Greek Civil War (1946–9) and its difficult aftermath. During the early 1960s his personal role, and that of his wife Queen Frederika, became sources of bitter political controversy. |
