| biography:
| King of Germany, born in Andria, Puglia, SE Italy. The son of Frederick II, he defended his right to the German throne but was defeated by William of Holland with the support of Pope Innocent IV. After his father's death in 1250, he renounced the German crown, and in 1251 crossed the Alps to claim the Kingdom of Sicily which was ruled by his stepbrother, Manfredi. He conquered Naples but failed to win the support of Pope Innocent. He died suddenly, leaving his son, Corradino, under Innocent's guardianship. |
