| Writer, born in Zürich, N Switzerland, a leading Realist. Fluent in both German and French, he opted for the former following the establishment of the German Reich. In the poetic field, the Balladen (1867) and Romanzen und Bilder (1871) culminated in such symbolical works as Der römische Brunnen and Zwei Segel (Gedichte, 1882). Best remembered for his novellas, which were frequently concerned with figures from the Renaissance and Peasants' Wars, displaying refined psychological insight coupled with virtuoso use of Rahmenerzählung (‘link and frame’) technique. Notable examples are Das Amulett (1873), Der Schuß von der Kanzel (1877), Gustav Adolfs Page (1882), Die Leiden eines Knaben (1883), Die Hochzeit des Mönchs (1884), and Die Richterin (1885). He also wrote novels, such as Jürg Jenatsch (1876), and verse epics including Huttens letzte Tage (1871) and Engelberg (1872). |
