| Literary critic and novelist, born in The Hague, W Netherlands. After studying theology, he became a minister of the church in Haarlem, but resigned in 1862. Working first as a journalist for a local newspaper, he made his mark as an editor and literary critic for the magazine De Gids, but his sharp attacks on established literary authorities caused him to leave the magazine in 1868. He emigrated to the East Indies, where he founded his own daily newspaper, Algemeen Dagblad van Nederlandsch-Indië. In 1878 he moved to Paris, where he died. |
