| Biochemist, born in McFarland, Wisconsin, USA. He studied and spent his entire career at Wisconsin University, ultimately as president (1958–62). In 1937 he showed that nicotinic acid cured two related deficiency diseases, canine blacktongue and human pellagra; it is now known as vitamin B6. He also showed that certain elements are essential in animal nutrition at trace levels, including copper, cobalt, and zinc. |
