| biography:
| Publisher, born in New York City, USA. After working for Collier's Weekly (1898–1907) he bought Vogue, then a small New York society magazine, transforming it into America's premier fashion magazine. He then turned Vanity Fair into a sophisticated magazine for all that was stylish, and eventually owned a stable of high-class magazines including House and Garden, British and French Vogue, and Glamour. Nearly ruined in the Depression, he spent his last years struggling to regain his early prosperity. |
