| Actor and playwright, born in London, UK. He spent most of his career at the Theatre Royal in Drury Lane. In 1696, his first comedy, Love's Last Shift, established his fame both as a dramatist and actor. As a manager and playwright, he greatly improved the decency of the theatre. From 1730 he was poet laureate. He is now principally remembered for his autobiography, Apology for the Life of Mr Colley Cibber, Comedian (1740), on account of the perceptive theatrical portraits of his contemporaries that it contains. |
