| British architect. He studied at Cambridge (1940–2) and at London University's School of Architecture (1946–9). He returned to Cambridge as a lecturer (1955–69), became professor of architecture (1975–89, now emeritus), and was made a fellow of Pembroke College in 1977. His many design projects include the extension to the British Museum (1973–9), and the Library for Queen Mary College, London University (1984–9), but he is best known for the new British Library (1962–97) in Euston Road, London. Among his publications is The Design and Construction of the British Library (1998). |
