| Ornithologist, born in Amsterdam, The Netherlands, the son of the treasurer of the Dutch East India Company. At the age of 17 he became an auctioneer with the company, and amassed a collection of bird specimens. His best-known work is the Manuel d'ornithologie (Manual of Ornithology), published from 1815. The first director of the new natural history museum at Leyden (from 1820), Temminck's stint, Temminck's cat, and Temminck's horned lark are named after him. |
