| Entrepreneur and oil executive, born in Athens, Texas, USA. He made a fortune when in his twenties by drilling Texas oil wells. He founded the natural gas industry with Southern Union Gas Co (1929–50) and built and ran a succession of large oil companies, also organizing a large conglomerate. His later railroad ventures included a celebrated takeover of the New York Central Railroad (1954). |
