| biography:
| Anthropologist and archaeologist, born in Prague, Czechoslovakia. A childhood immigrant to the USA, he became a curator (1969–77) and director (1977) of the Peabody Museum while concurrently a Harvard faculty member. He specialized in prehistoric Mesopotamian and Indus Valley civilizations, particularly trade, and published Ancient Civilizations (1979) and reports of his extensive excavations at Tepe Yahya, Iran (1970, 1986). |
