| biography:
| Pope (1592–1605), born in Fano, Marche, EC Italy. A lawyer, he became cardinal in 1585 and succeeded Innocent IX in 1592. He made peace with Henry IV and recognized his right to the French crown. In return, Henry supported his claim on Ferrara, which was incorporated in the Papal States after the death of Alfonso d'Este in 1597. He condemned Giordano Bruno to the stake, and was committed to reforming the Church. He mercilessly suppressed brigandage and immorality (Cenci trial, 1599). |
