| biography:
| Pope (1523–34), born in Florence, NC Italy. He allied himself with Francis I of France against the Holy Roman Emperor Charles V, was besieged by the Constable de Bourbon, and for a while became his prisoner. His indecisiveness, along with his refusal to sanction Henry VIII's divorce from Catherine of Aragón, hastened the Reformation. He was also a patron of artists and scholars. |
