| biography:
| Bishop and pope (1305–14), born in Bordelais, SW France. He became bishop of Comminges and Archbishop of Bordeaux (1299) before being elected pope in 1305, with the backing of Philip the Handsome. He was compelled by Philip to move the papacy from Rome to Avignon in 1309, thus starting the ‘Avignonese captivity’. He also, with the Council of Vienne, abolished the Templars. He enacted the Clementine Constitutions and founded the universities of Perugia and Orléans. |
