| Footballer, born in Livingston, New Jersey, USA, whose father was an Argentinian professional footballer playing for the club Independiente. Claudio made the US Olympic football squad while still at high school, and was voted 1993 College Player of the Year during his time at the University of Virginia. After a frustrating spell with Bundesliga (German Football League) club Bayer Leverkusen, he joined newly-promoted Wolfsburg (1997) where he became a successful midfielder and also the first US footballer ever to captain a Bundesliga team. In 1999 he joined Scottish Premier side Glasgow Rangers, returning to England to sign for Sunderland in late 2001. He missed out on the 1994 FIFA World Cup through injury, but was part of the 1998 squad. He was a member of the US squad for the 2002 FIFA World Cup, and named in the All-Star team of the tournament. His wife, Danielle, is a member of the US women's national team. |
