| Writer and patroness, born in Grenoble, E France. She gave up life as a nun, went to court and became mistress of, among others, Cardinal Dubois, the regent. She had a child, Jean le Rond d'Alembert, by one lover, the chevalier Destouches. She was imprisoned briefly on a murder charge in 1726 but later released. She then became the hostess of a salon frequented by writers such as Bernard de Fontenelle, Pierre de Marivaux, Jean-François Marmontel, and Montesquieu. Her most famous work is the semi-autobiographical Mémoires du Comte de Comminges. |
