A precise director who enjoyed directing actors, his films were relatively few because of his painstaking approach, but as a consequence were well made. They include Les Choses de la vie (Prix Louis-Delluc in 1970), Vincent, François, Paul et les autres (1974), Mado (1976), and Un coeur en hiver (1992). He won an Oscar nomination for best foreign film in 1978 for Une histoire simple, and a César in 1996 for Nelly & M Arnaud. |
