| biography:
| French army officer, born in Lons-le-Saunier, EC France. He wrote and composed the Marseillaise when stationed in 1792 as captain of engineers at Strasbourg. Its original name was ‘Chant de guerre de l'armée du Rhin’ (War Song of the Rhine Army), but it became known in Paris when it was sung by volunteers from Marseille during the French Revolution. |
