biography: Sailor and novelist, born in Lyon, SC France. He entered the École Navale in 1894, after which he began a life at sea which became central to his novels. His many books include L'Homme qui assassina (1907), La Bataille, Dix-sept histoires de Marins (1914), and Les Civilisés (1905), which received the Prix Goncourt. He was a member of the Académie Française.
