| biography:
| Painter of landscapes and seascapes, born in Avignon, SE France. After studying in his home town and Aix-en-Provence, he worked in Italy (1734–53), where he became well known for his striking portrayals of nature, particularly in his seascapes. In 1753–65 he produced paintings of France's 16 chief seaports, commissioned by Louis XV. He was elected a member of the Academy, and is regarded as a precursor of Romanticism. His son Antoine Charles Horace Vernet, known as Carle (1789–1863), was a painter of battle-scenes. |
