| Canadian statesman and prime minister (1979–80), born in High River, Alberta, W Canada. At first a journalist, then professor of political science, he was elected to the Federal parliament in 1972, becoming leader of the Progressive Conservative Party (1976) and of the Opposition. In 1979 he became Canada's youngest ever prime minister. His minority government lost the general election the following year, and he was deposed as Party Leader in 1983. After 1984 he was Canada's minister for external affairs, and retired from politics to take up a post with the UN in 1993. |
