| biography:
| Thoracic and cardiovascular surgeon, born in Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA. He trained in medicine, physiology, and surgery at Minnesota University, working in the department of surgery there for most of his life, apart from a period (1967–74) at Cornell University Medical Center in New York City. His pioneering work on open-heart surgery began in the early 1950s, before the development of the pump oxygenator made such procedures more reliable. |
