| Businessman and philanthropist, born in San Francisco, California, USA. The son of John W McKay, he studied in Paris and graduated from Beaumont College, UK (1892). He entered his father's business and worked on completing an international telegraph and cable system. He donated large sums of money to various projects, was a famous host at his home in Roslyn, Long Island, and collected mediaeval armour. He lost his fortune in the stock-market crash of 1929. |
