| biography:
| Marathon runner, born in Madeira, Ohio, USA. He won the Boston marathon seven times (1921–4, 1927–8, 1930), was placed second three times, and third twice. He also won the bronze medal in the 1924 Olympics. He continued to run the Boston marathon until the end of his life. At this time the race was thought suitable for only a relatively small elite group of men, and he was therefore regarded as a physical phenomenon. |
