| biography:
| Archaeologist, born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA. He was a wealthy socialite and international traveller who toured Europe and Asia Minor, crossed the Andes, and navigated the Amazon before turning to archaeology. He proved a meticulous fieldworker, and of his many studies of Indian mounds throughout SE USA, his excavations of the St John's shell middens in Florida (1892–4) were of particular value. |
