| Italian patriot and intellectual, born in Bergamo, Lombardy, N Italy. In 1846 she separated from her husband, the well-known scholar Andrea Maffei, and took part in Milan's Five Days insurrection of 1848. She was forced to leave for Switzerland, but returned to Milan, where her renowned salon was attended by a number of patriots, artists, and literary figures. |
