| biography:
| Duke of Modena and Reggio, born in Milan, Lombardy, N Italy, the son of Ferdinand of Austria and Beatrice of Este. He became duke after the fall of Napoleon and pursued a reactionary policy suppressing the 1820–1 liberal risings. In 1831 he at first seemed to support liberal plotters Ciro Menotti and Enrico Misley, but then turned his back on them and had Menotti executed. |
