| biography:
| Athenian commander, the son of Miltiades, particularly prominent in the 470s and 460s BC. Active in the mopping-up operations in the Aegean after the Persian Wars, his greatest exploit was the defeat, on the same day, of the Persian land and naval forces at the R Eurymedon (c.469 BC). In politics, he was less successful. His opposition to democracy at home and support for Sparta abroad brought him into conflict with Pericles, and he was ostracized in 461 BC. |
