| biography:
| English aristocrat, the wife of John Churchill, 1st Duke of Marlborough. In 1673 she entered the service of the Duke of York (the future James II), and became a close friend of his younger daughter, Princess Anne (the future Queen Anne): in their private correspondence, Anne was called ‘Mrs Morley’ and Sarah was ‘Mrs Freeman’. After Anne became queen, Sarah dominated her household and the Whig ministry. Anne finally broke with the Marlboroughs in 1711, when Sarah was supplanted by a new favourite, her cousin Mrs Abigail Masham. |
