| biography:
| British playwright, born on Fayal I, in the Azores. He studied at Oxford; his first play, When Did You Last See My Mother? (1966), was produced in London and New York while he was still an undergraduate, and led to his appointment as the Royal Court Theatre's first resident playwright. The Court produced more of his plays, including Total Eclipse (1968), The Philanthropist (1970), Savages (1973), set in Brazil, and Treats (1976). His finest play is considered to be Tales From Hollywood (1982), but his most commercial success has been Les Liaisons dangereuses (1985), adapted from the novel by Laclos. Later works include a semi-autobiographical play, White Chameleon (1991), Alice's Adventures Under Ground (1994), and Carrington (1995). |
