| biography:
| German politician, born in Zwickau, E Germany. By profession an agricultural engineer, following the political upheaval of 1989–90 he joined first the Neues Forum then the Christian Democratic Union (CDU). From 1990 he represented the latter in the Landtag (regional parliament) in Sachsen-Anhalt, becoming chairman (1991–3, then from 1994) of its parliamentary group there. He served as premier of Sachsen-Anhalt (1993–4), and in 1995 was appointed acting federal chairman of the CDU. |
