| biography:
| Avant-garde artist, born in Gabrovo, C Bulgaria. He studied art first in Sophia (1951–6), then briefly in Vienna (1957), before moving to Paris in 1958. In 1964 he moved permanently to New York City. His huge outdoor sculptures, which include wrapping objects (trees, cars, buildings) in canvas or plastic sheeting, and creating ‘assemblages’ of stacked oil drums, have continued to arouse controversy, especially among environmentalists. |
