| biography:
| Swedish statesman, born near Uppsala, E Sweden. From 1612 he served as chancellor, and negotiated peace with Denmark, Russia, and Poland; and though he sought to prevent Gustavus Adolphus from plunging into the Thirty Years' War, he supported the war effort, even after the king's death (1632). During most of the minority of Queen Christina he was effective ruler of the country (1636–44), vindicating his policies by the terms of the Peace of Westphalia (1648). |
