| biography:
| King of Denmark (1912–47), born in Charlottenlund, E Denmark. During his reign, Denmark's link with Iceland was severed (1918, 1944), but North Sleswig was recovered from Germany (1920). During the German occupation (1940–5), he attracted great acclaim by remaining in Denmark, seeking with some success to save the country, without undue collaboration, from the harshest effects of occupation. |
