| biography:
| King of Denmark (1596–1648), born at Frederiksborg Castle, Hillerød, E Denmark, the son of King Friedrich II and Sophie of Mecklenburg. Only 11 years old when his father died (1588), Denmark was ruled by a regency until he was crowned in 1596. His long reign was one of the most important in Denmark's history, but his foreign policy led to two unsuccessful wars against Sweden and brought his country disastrously into the Thirty Years’ War. He founded several fortified new towns and harbours, including Kristianstad, and built a number of fine buildings in a semi-Dutch style that was named after him. |
