| biography:
| Anatomist, the father of embryology, born in Riga, Latvia. At Würzburg with Karl Ernst von Baer he did valuable research on chick development in the egg, with particular regard to the embryonic layers now called by his name. He published his findings in 1817, accompanied a Russian mission to Bokhara as a naturalist (1820), and was elected a member of the St Petersburg Academy of Sciences (1826). |
