| Surgeon, born in Bergen, NE Germany. He became professor of surgery at Zürich (1860–7) and Vienna (1867–94). A pioneer of modern abdominal surgery, he performed the first successful excision of the larynx (1874) and the first resection of the intestine (1881). A brilliant musician, he was a friend of Brahms. |
