| biography:
| Afrikaner statesman and general, born in Smithfield district, Orange Free State, C South Africa. He became conspicuous in the Transvaal War of 1880–1, and in the war of 1899–1902 was the most audacious of all the Boer commanders. In 1907 he became minister of agriculture of the Orange River Colony, and in 1914 joined the South African insurrection, but was captured. Sentenced to six years' imprisonment, he was released in 1915. |
