| Physician and pathologist, born in Nijkerk, The Netherlands. He studied at Amsterdam, and became professor of public health and forensic medicine at Utrecht (1898–1928). Investigating the disease beriberi in Java, his observations of dietary deficiency led to the discovery of vitamins. He shared the 1929 Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine. |
