| Writer, born in Landsberg, Germany. She studied German literature and became a publisher's editor. A significant contemporary literary figure whose writing has been influenced by Bertolt Brecht, she won the Österreichischen Staatspreis für Literatur for her early work Moskauer Novelle (1961), and in recognition of her literary ability for Der geteilte Himmel (1963), a novel about divided Germany. Her novel Störfall (1987), concerning Chernobyl, is a further example of her political involvement and socially critical attitude to modern problems, as is Was bleibt (1990). She has also written scripts and literary essays. In 1980 she was awarded the Georg-Büchner-Preis. |
