| biography:
| Mediaeval poet, born in Troyes, NEC France. He enjoyed the patronage of Marie de Champagne, the daughter of Louis VII. His best-known works are the great metrical Arthurian romances, such as Lancelot and Perceval, which employ all the traditional ingredients of Celtic legend, and introduce into European literature the theme of the mystical Holy Grail. Erec et Enide (c.1160) is the earliest known Arthurian romance. |
