| Biochemist, born in Canton, SE China. He studied at Nanjing, and from 1935 at Berkeley, where he became professor of biochemistry (1950). His main work was on the pituitary hormones: he isolated adrenocorticotrophic hormone (ACTH), and by 1956 had established its molecular structure. Ten years later he had similar success with the growth hormone, somatotropin, which he synthesized in 1970. |
