| Novelist, born in Ogidi, W Nigeria. He studied at the University College of Ibadan, and his early career was in broadcasting. He was in Biafran government service during the Nigerian Civil War (1967–70), and then taught at US and Nigerian universities. His first novel, Things Fall Apart (1958), presenting an unsentimentalized picture of the Ibo tribe, was heralded as a fresh voice in African literature, and has since been translated into over 40 languages. Writing exclusively in English, his other novels include Arrow of God (1964), Anthills of the Savanna (1987), which was short-listed for the Booker Prize, and A Tribute to James Baldwin (1989). He has also written short stories, poetry, and children's books. His poetry includes Beware, Soul Brother (1971) on his experiences during the War. Another Africa appeared in 1998. |
