| Physicist, born in Foochow, China. He went to the USA to study at the California Institute of Technology (1944 PhD), taught there (1943–5), then moved to Brown (1945–7) before joining the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (1947–87). He made major contributions to the theory of hydrodynamic stability (1955), turbulent flow (1963), mathematics, and astrophysics. |
