| Poet and librettist, born in New York City, New York, USA. He studied at Brooklyn College (BA) and at the University of Michigan. He was praised for his volumes of poetry, such as Absent and Present (1963), but is best known for writing the libretto for Stravinsky's opera The Rake's Progress (1951), in collaboration with W H Auden. |
