| Chinese Communist leader, born in Lo-chih, Szechwan, C China. He studied in France, and joined the Communist Party on his return. He supported Mao Zedong in the struggle with the Kuomintang and the Japanese (1934). He formed the 4th Route Army in Kiangsi (1940), and commanded the East China Liberation Army (1946), restyled the 3rd (East China) Army (1948). Created Marshal of the People's Republic in 1955, he became foreign minister in 1958. He was dropped from the Politburo during the Cultural Revolution in 1969. |
