| biography:
| Geographer, born in Logan, Utah, USA. He studied at the University of Chicago (1940 PhD), remaining there to teach, and also served as dean of social sciences (1955–60) and director of the Center for International Studies (1966–84). Appointed Samuel N Harper Distinguished Service Professor (1973), he became vice-president for academics (1975–8), retiring in 1984. With J Fellman he compiled the International List of Geographical Serials (1960, 1971, 1980), and he wrote Cities of the Soviet Union (1970). He was active in national and international geographical organizations, holding several offices with the International Geographic Union. |
