| Lexicographer, scholar, and theologian, born in New Haven, Connecticut, USA, the son-in-law of Noah Webster. As professor of rhetoric and later of theology at Yale College, he wrote several influential works on Greek and Latin grammar. He also prepared an English-language edition of the Bible. He supervised the abridgment of Noah Webster's American Dictionary of the English Language, prepared by Joseph E Worcester in 1829, and served as the chief editor of the revised and enlarged edition of Webster's Dictionary (1847), the first in the continuing series published by G & C Merriam. |
