| biography:
| Daughter of Louis de Bourbon, Duke of Montpensier, and third wife of Prince William I of Orange. Her father had made her abbess of Jouarre, but Frederick II, Elector Palatine, removed her and she became Protestant. For a long time she refused to marry William, because his second (divorced) wife was still living. When finally she married him at Den Briel in 1975 there were many objectors, on the grounds of her previous Catholic vows and the irregularity of William's divorce. There were six daughters from the marriage. She died as a result of stress from nursing William who was wounded in Jean Jaureguy's assassination attempt in 1582. |
